The phrase “Makibaka! Huwag matakot!” is a battlecry that originated in the 1970s and 80s by activists fighting the rise of fascist dictatorship in the Philippines. It translates to “Fight! Do not be afraid!” The ancestor pictured holds a fighting stance in Kali, or Escrima, a weapons-based fighting system native to the Philippines that is one of the most influential forms of martial arts today.
